Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has honoured Rupamoni Gorh, the first woman from Assam to scale Mount Everest, in recognition of her historic achievement. At a felicitation ceremony held at Lok Sewa Bhawan in Dispur, the State Government presented financial assistance of Rs 10 lakh to Rupamoni Gorh and Rs 2 lakh to ITBP Assistant Commandant Bhanita Timungpi, who led the Indo-Tibetan Border Police’s All-Women Everest Expedition.
Congratulating Rupamoni, the Chief Minister said her successful ascent of Mount Everest on May 21 has brought immense pride to Assam and serves as an inspiration for young people through her courage, determination and perseverance. He also praised Bhanita Timungpi’s leadership, highlighting her extensive mountaineering experience and contribution to the expedition’s success under the Union Ministry of Home Affairs’ Nari Shakti Vandan initiative.
To commemorate Rupamoni’s achievement, the Chief Minister announced that the one-kilometre road connecting her residence to Lilabari High School in Lakhimpur district will be newly constructed and named Rupamoni Gorh Path.
Highlighting Assam’s rich mountaineering legacy, Sarma encouraged the youth to take up adventure sports, describing mountaineering as a field with promising career opportunities. He also assured aspiring climbers of the State Government’s continued support in promoting adventure sports and nurturing future talent.
