Construction of five footbridges along National Highway-27 in Guwahati is in progress to enhance pedestrian safety following fatal accidents and public demand for safer crossings. Announced by Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, this initiative was prompted by a tragic incident at Lalmati. The footbridges are located at Tetelia, Garbhanga near Gorchuk, Royal Global University, Sarusajai, and Lalmati, strategically placed along the Jalukbari-Khanapara route.
The construction of five footbridges is underway, with an estimated cost of Rs 30 lakh – Rs 35 lakh each. The work at the designated sites has begun, authorities aim to finish them before the Durga Puja festival, contingent on timely construction progress. This initiative responds to multiple pedestrian accidents on the highway, which were exacerbated by heavy traffic. Previously, iron grills were installed on the central divider to deter unsafe crossings. Upon completion, the footbridges are expected to enhance pedestrian safety, offer a more convenient crossing alternative, and bolster traffic flow along the busy corridor.
