The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) has demanded a comprehensive investigation into alleged technical and design flaws in the newly constructed Maharaj Prithu Flyover in Guwahati following a recent accident that reportedly claimed the life of a young businessman, Parimal Medhi. The party has also called for the temporary closure of the flyover until a thorough safety assessment is completed.
Addressing the media on Wednesday, Assam Pradesh Mahila Congress President Meera Borthakur urged the state government to initiate an independent inquiry into the incident and examine the Detailed Project Report (DPR) of the Rs 852 crore infrastructure project. She also sought strict action against the contractors, engineers and officials found responsible if any negligence or irregularities are established during the investigation.
Borthakur alleged that concerns regarding the flyover’s safety, particularly during rainfall, had been raised earlier but were not adequately addressed by the Public Works Department (PWD). She further alleged irregularities in the execution of the project and called for greater transparency and accountability in public infrastructure development.
In addition to raising concerns over the flyover, APCC leaders criticised the state government on issues related to the financial condition of Gauhati University and its education policies. They also accused the Central Government of failing to fulfil its commitment to grant Scheduled Tribe (ST) status to six communities in Assam.
