The Tripura Human Rights Commission (THRC) has ordered a detailed inquiry into the alleged assault of a woman in West Tripura district, taking suo motu cognisance of the incident based on a report published in a local daily.
The Commission, headed by Justice Arindam Lodh, directed the Director General of Police (DGP), Tripura, to investigate the allegations and submit a comprehensive report before the Commission.
According to the newspaper report examined by the THRC, the incident took place at Tata Kalibari under Takarjala Police Station. It alleged that despite more than 72 hours having passed since the incident, no FIR had been registered by the Officer-in-Charge of the police station, Rathin Debbarma. The report also questioned the response of the State Women’s Commission and the Human Rights Commission.
The woman was reportedly accused of having an illicit relationship and was called before a village “Panchayat Salishi” (informal village hearing). During the gathering, she was allegedly subjected to severe physical assault. The report stated that she sustained grievous injuries and was first admitted to Bishalgarh District Hospital before being referred to AGMC & GBP Hospital in Agartala, where she underwent major surgery. It further claimed that the victim identified the alleged attackers while undergoing treatment.
The Commission also noted allegations that relatives of the victim were threatened by supporters of the TIPRA Motha Party during their visit to the hospital.
Taking serious note of the allegations, the THRC ordered that its directions, along with the newspaper report, be forwarded to the DGP for a thorough investigation into all aspects of the case.
The Commission has fixed July 27, 2026, as the next date of hearing, when the DGP is expected to submit the inquiry report.
