Narcotics worth Rs 9.5 crore seized in Cachar; two women arrested

In a major operation against drug trafficking in the Northeast, the Assam Rifles’ Srikona Battalion, in coordination with Cachar Police, seized narcotics valued at around Rs 9.5 crore near Tollengram in Assam’s Cachar district on June 30.

The operation was launched following specific intelligence inputs regarding the movement of contraband in the area. During the search, security personnel recovered 30,000 Yaba tablets and 535 grams of Heroin No. 4.

Officials said the smugglers had attempted to conceal the narcotics inside jars packed with red chillies to avoid detection. The hidden contraband, however, was successfully detected and seized by the security forces.

Two women from Tollen village in Manipur’s Tamenglong district were arrested from the spot in connection with the seizure. They were subsequently handed over to Cachar Police, which has initiated further investigation into the case.

The seizure comes amid intensified anti-smuggling operations across the region. Just a day earlier, enforcement agencies had recovered Yaba tablets and heroin worth nearly Rs 5 crore, while another operation led to the seizure of foreign cigarettes valued at approximately Rs 2.8 crore.

Officials said the latest success reflects the strong coordination between the Assam Rifles, Cachar Police and the Customs Department in targeting narcotics trafficking and other cross-border smuggling activities in the Northeast.

The Assam Rifles reiterated its resolve to continue joint operations with law enforcement agencies to curb the drug menace and dismantle organised smuggling networks operating in the region.
