As part of the Silver Jubilee celebrations of the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism at Tezpur University, a special lecture titled “Why Media Freedom Matters to Citizens” was organized. Renowned journalist and Senior Editor of The Wire, Sangita Barua Pisharoty, participated as the keynote speaker. In her speech, Pisharoty explained the democratic role of journalism and stated Journalism is a public service deeply connected to the public interest, which is highly crucial in the current times. She expressed concern over the declining public trust in journalism and emphasized that information flow must increase. In this period of “post-truth,” it is vital to restore the credibility, accountability, and trust of journalists. The event began with a welcome address by Dr. Manoj Deori, Head of the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism, who explained the objectives and goals of the program. He noted that the department has organized several events to commemorate its 25 years of completion. Pisharoty further discussed how journalists must adapt to the changing media landscape and highlighted the need for students and practitioners to stay relevant through meaningful initiatives and education. She also warned against the rapid spread of misinformation and the creation of “echo chambers” in the current era. The Vice-Chancellor of Tezpur University, Professor Shambhu Nath Singh, also attended the event and welcomed the journalist. The program was attended by students, researchers, professors, and faculty members who engaged in an interactive session with the keynote speaker regarding the media’s current state and responsibilities.
