Kamakhya Corridor Project Kicks Off Under PM-DevINE To Ease Congestion And Boost Religious Tourism

The Assam government has begun preliminary work on the ambitious ₹498-crore Kamakhya Corridor project with the removal of shops and commercial establishments along the main approach road to the Kamakhya Temple atop Nilachal Hill.

The ongoing eviction drive marks the first phase of the project, which is being implemented under the Prime Minister’s Development Initiative for North East Region (PM-DevINE). The project aims to improve infrastructure around the temple and provide a better pilgrimage experience at one of India’s most revered Shakti Peethas.

Officials said the work commenced after extensive consultations with the state government, the Kamakhya Temple Management Committee and local residents. They reiterated that the project would be executed without affecting the temple’s historical, cultural and spiritual significance.

According to the government, the corridor will improve pedestrian movement, ease congestion around the temple complex, upgrade civic infrastructure and create better facilities for the millions of devotees who visit the shrine every year.

Authorities have also assured that the architectural character and sanctity of the ancient temple will be preserved while modern infrastructure is developed around the complex.

The Kamakhya Corridor is one of the Assam government’s flagship religious tourism projects and is expected to significantly boost pilgrimage tourism and generate greater economic activity in the region after its completion.
