Census 2027 in Assam to Feature Digital Enumeration and Self-Registration

The first phase of Census 2027 in Assam, covering House Listing and Housing Census, will be conducted from August 17 to September 15, while citizens will have the option of self-enumeration from August 2 to August 15. The schedule was announced by Director of Census Operations, Assam, Biswajit Pegu, during the District Media Workshop, Varta, organised by the Press Information Bureau (PIB), Guwahati, at the Directorate of Census Operations in Amingaon.

Pegu said Census 2027 will be India’s 16th Census and the eighth since Independence. The nationwide exercise will be carried out in two phases, beginning with House Listing and Housing Census, followed by Population Enumeration.

The Census will make extensive use of digital technology to improve efficiency and accuracy. Enumerators will use mobile applications for data collection, while citizens can complete self-enumeration through an online portal available in 16 languages. The Census Management and Monitoring System (CMMS) will also be used to oversee and streamline the entire process.

Calling for active public participation, Pegu urged citizens to cooperate with census officials to ensure the successful completion of the exercise. He clarified that the Census is a statistical exercise and not a legal document. Therefore, residents will not be required to submit any documents during the enumeration process. The initiative is expected to enhance the quality of data collection and support informed policy planning and development across the country.
