Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya has called for the preservation of the state’s rich Vaishnavite heritage during his visit to the historic Shri Shri Shiyala Vaishnav Deomornoi Satra in Darrang district on Wednesday. The Governor participated in Sri Krishna Janmashtami celebrations and highlighted Darrang’s historical and spiritual significance, including its longstanding connection with the Vaishnavite movement and the Battle of Patharughat. Extending his greetings on Janmashtami, Acharya emphasised the enduring influence of Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardeva in shaping Assam’s social and cultural identity through the teachings and values associated with Lord Krishna, including righteousness, devotion, love, welfare and human upliftment. He described Satras and Naamghars as important “schools of culture” that nurture spiritual awareness while preserving Assam’s traditional art, heritage and social values. The Governor said these institutions have played a vital role in strengthening social harmony and continue to serve as important centres of cultural and spiritual life. He stressed that protecting the state’s Vaishnavite traditions is essential to preserving Assam’s distinctive cultural identity and ensuring that its spiritual and artistic heritage continues to inspire future generations. The Janmashtami celebration at the historic Satra provided an opportunity to reaffirm the importance of maintaining Assam’s centuries-old traditions while promoting the values of unity, compassion and human welfare associated with the state’s Vaishnavite legacy.
