Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday took the oath of office and secrecy as the Chief Minister of Assam for a second consecutive term during a grand swearing-in ceremony held at Khanapara in Guwahati. Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya administered the oath of office in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, other Union Ministers, senior NDA leaders, Chief Ministers and Deputy Chief Ministers from 22 states, industrialists, bureaucrats, party workers and a large gathering of people. After taking oath, Sarma, who also scripted history by becoming the first non-Congress minister to be sworn in as Assam Chief minister for a second consecutive term, said he would fulfil his responsibilities with dedication and continue working for the peace, progress and development of Assam.
Four ministers designate – Rameswar Teli, Atul Bora, Charan Boro and Ajanta Neog – also took the oath of office as Cabinet Ministers in the Sarma-led government in the State. According to sources, 18 other ministers would be inducted in the Sarma-led government. Among other leaders who were present at the oath-taking are Union Ministers Rajnath Singh, Sarbananda Sonowal, Kiren Rijiju, Shivraj Singh Chauhan, Lalan Singh, Nitin Gadkari, Jyotiraditya Scindia and Chirag Paswan.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, her Goa counterpart Pramod Sawant, West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, Rajasthan’s Bhajan Lal Sharma, Bihar’s Samrat Choudhury, Chhattisgarh’s Vishnu Dev Sai, Uttarakhand’s Pushkar Singh Dhami, Maharashtra’s Devendra Fadnavis, Odisha’s Mohan Charan Maji and Madhya Pradesh’s Mohan Yadav were also present at the ceremony. Among Chief Ministers of other North East states present were Tripura’s Manik Saha, Nagaland’s Neiphiu Rio, Mizoram’s Lalduhoma, Manipur’s Y Khemchand Singh, Arunachal Pradesh’s Pema Khandu and Sikkim’s Prem Singh Tamang. The BJP-led NDA returned to power in Assam for a third consecutive term after securing a historic mandate in the 2026 Assembly elections. BJP won as many as 82 seats while allies AGP and BPF bagged 10 seats each in the 126-member Assam Legislative Assembly.
