Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday visited several erosion-affected areas in Dibrugarh district, including Chabua, Balijan, Pukhurijan, Dinjan and Rohmoria, to assess the ground situation. During the visit, he reviewed the damage caused by riverbank erosion and interacted with officials overseeing relief and protection measures.
The Chief Minister said the concerned departments are responding with urgency to contain the erosion. However, he stressed that scientific and long-term measures are essential to provide a permanent solution. He added that the state government will soon hold discussions with experts from the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IIT-G) to develop sustainable strategies for protecting vulnerable riverbanks.
Sarma described erosion caused by the Brahmaputra as one of Assam’s greatest geographical challenges, noting that the river continues to wash away valuable land every year. He expressed confidence that modern technology and expert guidance would help strengthen erosion-control efforts across the state.
Speaking to reporters, the Chief Minister said a Rs 90-crore project has already been submitted by the concerned department and will be reviewed in consultation with experts. During his visit to Dibrugarh, Sarma also paid tribute to the late Prasad Sonowal, a noted social worker and elder brother of Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, at the family residence.
