Google kicked off the 2026 Android Show: I/O Edition with a seismic shift towards proactive AI, including the launch of “Gemini Intelligence” for Android and the debut of the “Googlebook” laptop category. Gemini Intelligence is baked right into Android so it can go beyond a traditional operating system and get things done across multiple steps. Our system leverages the screen and image context to automate tasks such as creating shopping carts from note lists or researching tours from photos, while keeping the user in control and their data private. These features are arriving this summer for premium Samsung and Pixel devices, before expanding to other hardware.
This mobile expansion is complemented by a premium laptop series, the Googlebook, built from the ground up for Gemini. These laptops are replacing the long-standing Chromebook and are based on a modern platform that combines the foundations of Android and ChromeOS. The hardware features a distinctive “glowbar” on the lid and debuts the “Magic Pointer”, an AI-aware cursor that offers contextual suggestions such as scheduling meetings with dates in email or visualizing design combos, just by hovering or wiggling the cursor. Google is working with partners including ASUS, Dell and HP on the Googlebook, hoping to tightly integrate it with Android phones so apps can be mirrored and files accessed seamlessly. Googlebook is set to debut in the fall, marking Google’s full-scale entry into the premium, AI-first personal computing market.
