The Assam government on May 19 distributed laptops to 71 DigiPay Sakhis at Amingaon under the Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana-National Rural Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NRLM) scheme in a move aimed at strengthening digital financial services in rural areas and promoting women’s empowerment.
The programme was organised in the presence of senior officials of the Kamrup district administration, including Deba Kumar Mishra.
Officials said the initiative is designed to improve last-mile digital banking services by enabling women from Self-Help Groups (SHGs) to work as community banking agents. The DigiPay Sakhis will help people in rural areas access financial services more easily through digital platforms.
According to officials, the scheme is expected to play an important role in expanding digital transactions and improving access to banking facilities in villages where financial services are often limited.
The government said the initiative is in line with the vision of women empowerment and inclusive development promoted by Himanta Biswa Sarma.
Through the DigiPay Sakhi programme, the state government aims to speed up Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) services, reduce the role of middlemen in welfare delivery systems and improve transparency in the distribution of government benefits at the grassroots level.
Officials added that the initiative will also help improve financial literacy and digital awareness in rural communities while creating livelihood opportunities for women associated with Self-Help Groups across Assam.
The distribution of laptops is expected to strengthen the functioning of DigiPay Sakhis by helping them carry out digital banking and financial service operations more efficiently in their respective areas.
