Army, communities plant 10,000 saplings across Upper Assam ahead of Environment Day

In the run-up to World Environment Day, the Indian Army’s Red Shield Division under the Spear Corps, in partnership with the Forest Department and local communities, carried out a large-scale plantation and cleanliness campaign across Upper Assam, planting nearly 10,000 saplings over a period of three days. The campaign, held from June 1 to June 3, covered several locations in Tinsukia and Charaideo districts, including Tinkopani, Jagun, the Amguri area of Phillobari Reserve Forest at Rupai, and Patsaku. The initiative was aimed at expanding green cover, promoting environmental conservation and encouraging greater community participation in protecting natural resources.

According to a press release, the programme brought together a wide cross-section of society. Indian Army personnel, Territorial Army troops, Forest Department officials, ex-servicemen, NCC cadets, school students, youth groups, local organisations, civil volunteers and residents participated in the drive. Officials said the plantation exercise was designed not only to improve the region’s green cover but also to strengthen awareness about ecological conservation, biodiversity protection and climate resilience. Through active participation from different sections of society, the campaign sought to encourage a sense of shared responsibility towards environmental protection. The initiative also highlighted the importance of cooperation between the Army, civil administration, Forest Department and local communities in addressing environmental challenges and supporting sustainable development. Participants joined hands in plantation and cleanliness activities, reinforcing the message that conservation efforts require collective action.

Officials noted that such programmes help strengthen relations between security forces and local residents while creating awareness about the need to preserve forests and natural ecosystems for future generations. The Indian Army stated that the campaign reflects its continued commitment towards community welfare, environmental sustainability and nation-building activities beyond its primary security responsibilities.
