The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Tata Electronics Private Limited to strengthen semiconductor Assembly, Testing, Marking and Packaging (ATMP) education, skill development, and research in India.
As part of the collaboration, a Centre of Excellence (CoE) will be established at the IIT Guwahati campus to develop industry-ready talent and promote advanced research in semiconductor packaging technologies.
The partnership aims to address the growing demand for skilled professionals in the semiconductor sector by introducing industry-aligned educational and training programmes. It is also expected to strengthen the semiconductor talent ecosystem in Assam and the Northeast by creating opportunities for students from engineering colleges, polytechnics, and other educational institutions.
The MoU was signed by Prof. Rohit Sinha, Dean (R&D), IIT Guwahati, and Ranjan Bandyopadhyay, Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO), Tata Electronics, at the IIT Guwahati campus. The signing ceremony was attended by Prof. Devendra Jalihal, Director, IIT Guwahati, Prof. Sukumar Nandi, Dean (Administration), IIT Guwahati, Vaswati Sarma Borthakur, Erwin Estepa, and J M Nowful.
Under the agreement, IIT Guwahati will lead the development and delivery of educational programmes, including diploma-level training and B.Tech courses focused on semiconductor ATMP technologies. The programmes will incorporate practical and hands-on training to equip students with industry-relevant skills.
The collaboration will also facilitate the identification of engineering colleges, universities, and polytechnics for expanding semiconductor-focused education and training. Students from participating institutions will receive hands-on training opportunities, while faculty members will undergo specialised training to enhance semiconductor-related teaching capabilities.
Additionally, the partnership will support the joint development of industry-oriented course content, educational resources, and specialised training modules. Students will also have opportunities for training at Tata Electronics and collaborative research in semiconductor packaging, assembly, testing, and related fields.
Speaking on the occasion, IIT Guwahati Director Prof. Devendra Jalihal said the initiative would help connect academia, industry, and students through specialised education, practical training, and collaborative research.
He noted that the partnership would broaden access to technical education and strengthen the regional talent pipeline by supporting semiconductor-focused curricula and engaging educational institutions across Assam.
The collaboration marks a significant step in India’s efforts to emerge as a global hub for semiconductor technology, innovation, and workforce development.
