Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi alleged that crimes against women and children remain a serious concern in Assam despite repeated claims by the BJP-led government about improvement in law and order in the state.
Referring to data from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) 2024 report, Gogoi said the figures present a worrying picture of public safety in Assam, particularly for women, children and vulnerable sections of society.
In a post shared on social media, the Congress leader highlighted several crime figures recorded in Assam during 2024. According to the data cited by him, the state registered 9,556 violent crimes during the year. The figures also included 10,546 crimes against women, 927 rape cases, 1,787 kidnapping and abduction cases and 933 murder cases.
Gogoi further stated that Assam recorded 743 cases of assault on women with intent to outrage modesty. He also pointed to 2,907 cases registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act involving girl child victims. According to the figures shared by him, the state reported 5,871 crimes against children during the year.
Taking aim at the BJP government in Assam, Gogoi alleged that despite years of publicity campaigns and political messaging, the ground situation for ordinary citizens remains troubling.
He said women and children in the state continue to face insecurity and violence and questioned repeated claims made by the ruling party regarding Assam being a safe state.
“In a state where thousands of women and children become victims of violence and abuse every year, it cannot be called safe,” Gogoi said in his statement while criticising the government’s handling of law and order issues.
The Congress MP further said governance should not be limited to speeches, image building or political campaigns, but must focus on ensuring safety, justice and dignity for citizens.
He also claimed that people in Assam are looking for a secure and inclusive society and not what he described as a “publicity-driven and divisive government.”
The BJP government in Assam has repeatedly maintained that the law and order situation in the state has improved over the years and has highlighted measures taken for women’s safety, policing reforms and action against crime. However, opposition parties have continued to raise concerns over incidents involving crimes against women and children.
