India opener Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sri Lanka pacer Asitha Fernando have both been fined 25 per cent of their match fees and given one demerit point following their heated exchange during the second Test in Colombo.
The incident occurred after Jaiswal was dismissed by Fernando in the 17th over of India’s first innings. Fernando appeared to celebrate with a send-off, prompting Jaiswal to turn back and confront the bowler.
The confrontation escalated when the two players made head contact before Sri Lanka’s teammates stepped in to separate them. Jaiswal had made 45 before playing the ball onto his stumps, with the wicket being Fernando’s first of four in the innings.
The ICC confirmed that both players were found guilty of a Level 1 offence under Article 2.12 of its Code of Conduct, which covers inappropriate physical contact during an international match.
Both players accepted the sanctions recommended by match referee Andy Pycroft, avoiding the need for a formal hearing. The demerit point is the first for both Jaiswal and Fernando in the last 24 months.
