The fourth top leader of the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) has been arrested for his alleged involvement in the violence during the black flag bike rally taken out by the organization on August 19. Meghalaya Police apprehended the organization’s Assistant Organizing Secretary Jeremiah Pohthmi on Monday morning. After being produced in court, he was remanded to judicial custody.
According to police, five masked miscreants involved in arson and attacks on Assam-registered vehicles and pedestrians during the bike rally had already been identified, and Jeremiah Pohthmi was one of them.
In a suo motu statement on the floor of the Meghalaya Assembly, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma mentioned that five masked persons involved in the August 19 incident have been identified and one of them has already been arrested. Replying to queries from journalists about the progress of the investigation, the Chief Minister said, “I don’t have the complete information at the moment, I will review the matter today. All strict measures will continue to bring every miscreant involved in the crime under the purview of law.”
It may be noted that immediately after the incident, police had already arrested KSU President Raymond Kharjana, Vice President Pynkmenlang Sanmiet and General Secretary Reuben Najiar.
