Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) in Dibrugarh has initiated a high-level inquiry into allegations that a surgeon denied a patient treatment benefits under the Ayushman Bharat health insurance scheme and advised the family to purchase medicines from outside sources.
The issue came to light after local BJP leader Ujjal Kashyap raised concerns through a social media post. According to the allegations, the patient’s family was initially informed that medicines covered under the Ayushman Bharat scheme would not be used for the surgery. They were reportedly given a list of operation theatre medicines and asked to arrange them independently.
The situation allegedly changed after higher authorities were informed. Following intervention, the family was told that medicines could be provided through the Ayushman Bharat scheme, and the surgery was successfully conducted on June 12.
The family also raised concerns regarding post-operative care, claiming that the surgeon did not personally visit the patient between June 12 and June 17. They alleged that the patient was primarily attended to by nursing staff during the recovery period.
In response to the allegations, AMCH authorities held a high-level meeting and constituted an inquiry committee to investigate the matter. AMCH Superintendent Dr. Dhrubajyoti Bhuyan confirmed that the investigation is underway and assured that strict action will be taken if any wrongdoing is established. The inquiry is expected to clarify the facts and ensure accountability in patient care and the implementation of the Ayushman Bharat scheme.
