Indian Roots, Global Pride: Sarpreet Singh Leads Kiwi Charge in World Cup

In the 96-year history of the Football World Cup, India’s name has not been included so far. Every time, India’s campaign ends in the qualification stage itself. Even though their own country is not playing, there is no dearth of fans. Whenever the World Cup arrives, Indian football fans become supporters of various countries. Cities and villages overflow with the flags of Brazil, Argentina, Spain, and Germany. The 2026 World Cup is approaching. Indians are ready to support their favorite teams. It is a matter of great joy for the countrymen that even though India is not in this World Cup, at least one Indian is present. Sarpreet Singh, of Indian origin, is in the New Zealand squad.
27-year-old Sarpreet Singh is an attacking midfielder. Sarpreet was also part of the team in the 2019 FIFA U-20 World Cup. Following his beautiful performance over the past three seasons at Wellington Phoenix club, he has earned a spot in the main squad this time.
In the 1980s, Sarpreet’s parents left a remote village in Punjab’s Amritsar district and headed towards New Zealand in search of a livelihood. Although New Zealand is famous for cricket and baseball, Sarpreet’s mind was set on football. Despite tough challenges, he improved remarkably. Finally, his hard work bore fruit. New Zealand is not a powerhouse in the football world; crossing even the first hurdle is difficult for them. However, nothing is impossible. Along with Messi, Ronaldo, and Mbappé, Indians will also have their eyes on Sarpreet.
Vikash Dhorasoo was the first player of Indian origin to feature in a World Cup squad, playing for France in the 2006 World Cup. This time, however, it is not just Sarpreet Singh; there is a possibility for two others as well. Niall Mason and Tahsin Mohammed have found a place in Qatar’s preliminary squad. Niall, who was born in England, has an Indian mother, while Tahsin’s parents are from Kerala.
