Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati has launched a first-of-its-kind M.Tech programme in Robotics and Artificial Intelligence aimed at both fresh graduates and working professionals seeking expertise in AI-driven robotic systems.
The programme, offered by the School of Interdisciplinary Studies and Sustainability, will be conducted in hybrid mode, combining online classes with on-campus laboratory sessions and final examinations at the IIT Guwahati campus. The initiative is designed to bridge multiple engineering disciplines and support advancements in sectors such as agriculture, defence, manufacturing, healthcare, transportation, and smart infrastructure.
The application portal for the inaugural batch has been opened, with the last date for submission of applications set for July 15, 2026. Classes are scheduled to begin from August 10, 2026.
One of the major highlights of the programme is that applicants are not required to submit a GATE score. Selection will instead be based on a written test and interview conducted by the institute.
Speaking on the initiative, Hemant B. Kaushik, Dean of Outreach Education and Skilling at IIT Guwahati, said the programme has been designed to address the increasing demand for expertise in intelligent systems. He noted that the course offers interdisciplinary learning in machine learning, computer vision, and robotics through a flexible format with a strong focus on real-world applications.
The programme has been structured for freshers, working professionals, and students pursuing parallel degrees. IIT Guwahati stated that the curriculum has been designed to align with industry requirements while also fitting into the professional schedules of learners.
All classes will be conducted online and recordings will be made available for students to learn at their own pace. However, final examinations will take place on the IIT Guwahati campus. There is also no age restriction for applicants.
The minimum duration of the programme is two years, although students will have the flexibility to complete it within a maximum period of five years, allowing them to balance academic and professional commitments.
Students enrolled in the programme will also get opportunities to visit the IIT Guwahati campus for hands-on training, interaction with experts, and guidance from faculty members for project work. The institute further stated that students will be able to work on real-world industry challenges after completing the core courses.
A notable feature of the programme is its multiple-entry and multiple-exit structure. Students who complete the initial core courses can exit with a PG Certificate in Basics in Robotics and Artificial Intelligence. Those completing core and elective courses can obtain a PG Diploma in Robotics and Artificial Intelligence. Students finishing all courses along with one capstone project will receive a Master of Science (Engineering) degree, while those completing all coursework and capstone projects will be awarded the M.Tech degree in Robotics and Artificial Intelligence.
Students exiting at any intermediate stage will also have the option to rejoin the programme after a one-year gap to continue their studies.
To apply, candidates must possess a four-year or five-year bachelor’s degree in disciplines such as Electrical, Electronics, Computer Science, Mechanical, Production, Civil Engineering, IT, Design, or related fields, or hold a master’s degree in a relevant subject. Applicants must also have studied Mathematics up to at least Class 12 level and secured a minimum of 60 per cent marks or 6.0 CPI.
According to the institute, graduates of the programme will gain expertise in areas including robot kinematics, dynamics and control, machine learning, deep learning, and computer vision. They are expected to be prepared for careers as robotics engineers, AI/ML engineers, computer vision specialists, automation engineers, data scientists, and intelligent systems researchers across industry and academia.
