Himanta Biswa Sarma Elected Assam BJP Legislature Party Leader, Set for Second Term as CM

Himanta Biswa Sarma was elected as the leader of the BJP legislature party in Assam today, confirming his second consecutive term as the Chief Minister of the state. BJP central observer and Union Minister JP Nadda announced that Sarma was elected unanimously as the party’s leader in the State Assembly, paving the way for his swearing in as the Chief Minister on May 12. Assam BJP’s legislature party meeting was held in Guwahati this morning.

Apart from Nadda, Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini was also present at the meeting as central co-observer. State party president Dilip Saikia, and all newly elected MLAs of the BJP were also in attendance. Sarma will now meet Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya to stake claim to form the third consecutive BJP-led NDA government in the state. Sarma will be accompanied by Dilip Saikia, and leaders of NDA allies AGP and BPF, during his meeting with the Governor. NDA has returned to power for a third consecutive term by securing 102 seats in the 126-member Assam Legislative Assembly.
