The Dibrugarh District Administration on Monday carried out a major eviction drive in the Paltan Bazar area behind the Chief Minister’s Secretariat along Maijan Road, targeting alleged illegal encroachments on government land near the Brahmaputra River.
According to officials, the operation focused on removing unauthorised settlements that had occupied land belonging to the Water Resources Department for several years. Nearly 100 families residing on the riverbank were reportedly affected by the eviction drive.
During the operation, several houses and commercial structures built on the government land were demolished as authorities moved to reclaim the encroached area. Officials stated that the action was necessary to protect public property and prevent further illegal occupation of the environmentally sensitive riverbank zone.
The eviction drive was conducted under strict security arrangements, with personnel from Dibrugarh Police and various government departments deployed to maintain law and order. Authorities confirmed that the operation was completed peacefully without any major incidents.
The district administration has not yet disclosed the total extent of land recovered during the drive. A detailed assessment is expected to be conducted before official figures are released.
The operation is part of the administration’s ongoing efforts to clear encroachments and ensure the proper utilisation and protection of government-owned land in Dibrugarh. Officials reiterated their commitment to safeguarding public resources and preventing future illegal occupation in the area.
