Assam to redevelop GMCH with ₹4,382 crore project; CM unveils vision for world-class medical campus

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced an ambitious ₹4,382 crore redevelopment project for the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), aimed at transforming the state’s premier government hospital into one of India’s leading healthcare institutions.

Sharing the announcement on social media platform X, the Chief Minister described the project as a landmark investment in Assam’s healthcare sector and said it would bring sweeping improvements to medical infrastructure, treatment facilities and patient services.

“Wait till you see the new GMCH,” Sarma wrote, highlighting the government’s vision of creating a modern, state-of-the-art healthcare campus capable of meeting the growing medical needs of Assam and the Northeast.

According to the Chief Minister, the redevelopment plan will significantly expand GMCH’s capacity, modernise hospital infrastructure and introduce advanced medical facilities to improve the quality of healthcare delivery.

The project is expected to ease the burden on the existing hospital, which caters to thousands of patients every day from Assam and neighbouring northeastern states.

Officials said the redevelopment will focus on constructing modern hospital buildings, expanding treatment facilities, strengthening critical healthcare services and creating a more patient-friendly environment.

The state government is expected to announce detailed project plans, implementation timelines and execution strategies in the coming days.
