Assam Intensifies Anti-Drug Crackdown, Several Arrested in Separate Operations

Assam Police and security forces intensified their crackdown on illegal drugs with separate operations across the state, resulting in the arrest of several suspected drug peddlers and the seizure of narcotic substances.

Kharuabandha Police conducted an anti-drug operation in Hatsingimari and arrested a suspected drug peddler identified as Nurul Asid. Police said 161 suspected narcotic tablets and a bottle of cough syrup were recovered from his possession. He has been taken into custody and further investigation is underway to trace the source of the seized substances and determine whether others are involved in the alleged drug supply network.

In another major operation in the Barak region, a joint team of 39 Assam Rifles, 20 Battalion CRPF and Borobekra Police Station arrested six alleged drug traffickers and seized suspected narcotics estimated to be worth around Rs 27 crore.

Acting on intelligence inputs about the movement of suspected anti-social elements around Tipidor and Choudhurykhal villages along the Barak River, the security forces launched a special operation on August 20. During the operation, six people travelling in a local boat were intercepted at Tipidor village.

The operation led to the recovery of approximately 9.412 kg of suspected WY tablets and 177 grams of suspected Heroin No. 4 powder. The arrested persons were identified as Elbethel Lungtau, Pana Hmar, Denthar Hmar, Laltiunglien Hmar, Lal Ramthar Hmar and Thowna Hmar. The accused persons and the seized substances were handed over to the concerned authorities for further legal action and investigation.

Meanwhile, personnel from Noonmati Police Station under the Guwahati Police Commissionerate arrested another suspected drug peddler during a raid at Borochawk. The accused was identified as 39-year-old Haren Kalita, a resident of Haripur.

According to police, Kalita was apprehended with 12 vials containing suspected heroin weighing 14.18 grams. Six empty vials, Rs 5,650 in cash and a mobile phone were also recovered from his possession. Police further recovered a stolen Yamaha Ray Z scooter, which is suspected to be linked to the accused.

Kalita has been taken into custody and legal proceedings have been initiated. Further investigation is underway to establish the source of the drugs and determine whether he was connected to a wider drug trafficking network. The series of operations reflects continued efforts by Assam Police and security agencies to curb the trafficking and distribution of narcotic substances across the state.
