The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) held a protest outside Lok Bhavan in Guwahati on Tuesday evening against the detention of Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, denouncing the BJP government’s crackdown on democratic dissent.
Assam Congress, led by Leader of Opposition in State Assembly Wazed Ali Choudhury, also expressed solidarity with those protesting in Delhi against exam paper leak and demanding resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
They sought the withdrawal of police cases registered against protesting students and youth in New Delhi during the ‘Sansad Chalo’ march on Monday.
The opposition party delegation sought an audience with Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya, but failed to meet him.
As the Congress leaders and members approached the Governor’s house in Guwahati at around 8 pm, police prevented them from entering the premises.
They raised slogans against the BJP government, demanding accountability over the paper leaker and action against those responsible for alleged police high-handedness against protestors in New Delhi on Monday.
A police officer urged the Congress to submit their list of demands through her, but the opposition leaders refused and questioned why they were being prevented from meeting the governor in person.
The Congress members staged a brief sit-in demonstration there.
