In a major boost to regional healthcare, the Assam Cabinet has approved a ₹600 crore project to establish a Proton Beam Therapy unit for advanced cancer treatment at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH). Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma highlighted that this initiative will make Assam the first state in India to offer proton beam therapy—a precise radiation treatment that minimizes damage to surrounding healthy tissue—within the public healthcare sector. The project is co-financed through a ₹315 crore World Bank loan alongside a ₹285 crore contribution from the state government, aiming to enhance local oncology care and foster medical tourism. Alongside this healthcare milestone, the Cabinet also sanctioned a massive ₹50,000 crore expenditure plan spanning seven years from 2027–28 to drive state-wide development, including upgrading 1,000 high schools, setting up 6,000 new Anganwadi centres, building women’s markets and stadiums, and expanding road infrastructure.
