The second day of the four-day session of the Assam Legislative Assembly witnessed major uproar on Friday after Congress legislators staged protests and walked out of the House over rising fuel prices and inflation during Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya’s address.
The disturbance began shortly after the Governor started his speech, praising the peaceful completion of the 2026 Assam Assembly elections and the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Opposition MLAs interrupted the address, alleging that the government had failed to address the growing economic hardships faced by common people.
Congress legislators raised slogans inside the Assembly, criticising the government for ignoring key public concerns such as rising fuel prices, inflation and LPG shortages. Soon after, the opposition members walked out of the House and continued their protest outside the Assembly premises with placards and anti-government slogans.
Raijor Dal leader Akhil Gogoi and his party MLAs initially remained inside the House before later joining the walkout after submitting their concerns in writing.
Speaking to reporters, opposition leaders accused both the Centre and the state government of failing to control inflation and becoming disconnected from the struggles of ordinary citizens. First-time Congress MLA Zubair Anam also criticised the Governor’s speech for not mentioning LPG shortages and the rising cost of living.
Meanwhile, BJP legislators defended the government, stating that the issue of rising prices would be handled effectively. The Assembly was later adjourned till May 25, 2026.
