Amid the celebrations of sporting success, Assamese boxer Lovlina Borgohain also showed awareness about the integrity of the country’s map. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has praised Lovlina for protesting against a distorted map of India, with the North-East missing, at a restaurant in Glasgow.
On Sunday, the Prime Minister interacted with Indian athletes who won medals at the Commonwealth Games at his residence. The Prime Minister’s Office released the video of the interaction on Monday. During the event, Modi also spoke with Lovlina, who won the silver medal in the women’s 75kg category at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, about the incident.
When asked what happened at the restaurant, the Prime Minister raised the issue with Lovlina. In reply, Lovlina said that while she had gone to the restaurant with fellow Indian athletes to celebrate their success in the Games, she noticed a distorted map of India. The North-Eastern region of the country was not shown on that map.
Lovlina said, _“We were celebrating and at that time seeing the distorted map did not feel good. I politely informed them about it and they also corrected the map.”
Following this, Modi praised Lovlina’s action. Appreciating Lovlina’s awareness in raising the issue even while celebrating sporting success, and for understanding the importance of the country’s map, the Prime Minister said the video of the incident was not ordinary and that it would remain in people’s minds for a long time.
After the incident, the issue of the restaurant in Glasgow having a map of India without the North-East came to the fore. While Indian athletes were wrapping up their Commonwealth Games campaign and celebrating their success, Lovlina raised the matter with the restaurant authorities. Subsequently, the restaurant management agreed to correct the map.
Meanwhile, by winning the silver medal at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, Lovlina won her first Commonwealth Games medal. Along with Olympic medalist Mirabai Chanu, the Assam boxer also performed the duty of India’s flag bearer at the event.
India finished fourth overall on the medals table at the 2026 Commonwealth Games held in Glasgow from July 23 to August 2. During the interaction with medal-winning Indian athletes, Modi also listened to their experiences from the tournament.
