Rising Prices of Essentials Increase Financial Pressure on Assam Households

Households across Assam are facing increased financial pressure as the prices of essential commodities continue to rise, significantly affecting the cost of daily living. Consumers say the steady increase in the prices of staple food items is making it increasingly difficult to manage monthly household expenses.

Among the major price hikes, Sonashakti rice has increased from around Rs 1,570 to Rs 1,820 per bag, while Arham rice has risen from Rs 1,280 to approximately Rs 1,430 per bag. Laxmibhog rice has also become more expensive, with prices climbing from Rs 1,230 to nearly Rs 1,380 per bag.

Edible oil prices have increased by Rs 10 to Rs 20 per litre in recent weeks. Engine brand oil now sells for around Rs 255 per litre, up from Rs 237, while Dhara oil has risen from Rs 195 to nearly Rs 220 per litre. Sugar prices have also gone up, increasing from Rs 48 to Rs 52 per kilogram.

The sharpest increase has been recorded in onion prices, which have doubled from Rs 25 to around Rs 50 per kilogram. Egg prices have also risen, with a tray now costing approximately Rs 250, compared to Rs 230 earlier.

Traders have attributed the price increases to higher procurement and transportation costs. Consumers, meanwhile, are urging authorities to take steps to stabilise prices, saying the continued rise in the cost of essential goods is placing an increasing burden on household budgets across the state.
