Arup Kumar Dutta’s Latest Works Released at Literary Event in Guwahati

Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal launched two new novels by acclaimed Assamese author Arup Kumar Dutta at a literary event held in Guwahati on Wednesday. The programme was organised to mark the celebrated writer’s birthday and was attended by distinguished guests, including writers, academics, media representatives and literary enthusiasts.

The two books unveiled were Leaves No Longer Green, published by HarperCollins India, and The Beg, published by Assam Book Hive. Speaking at the event, Sonowal underscored the importance of cultivating reading habits among young people, stating that literature plays a vital role in developing critical thinking, empathy and a strong sense of cultural identity.

Describing the themes of the novels, the Union Minister said Leaves No Longer Green presents a historical account of exploitation and hardship faced by workers in Assam’s tea gardens. Meanwhile, The Beg explores the complex issue of insurgency in Northeast India, focusing on its human impact and emotional consequences.

The event celebrated not only the release of two significant literary works but also the enduring contribution of Arup Kumar Dutta to Assamese and Indian literature. The novels are expected to spark meaningful discussions on history, society and the human experiences that continue to shape the region.
