River Depi Erosion Leaves Nine Families Homeless in Jonai

Continuous heavy rainfall in the Jonai region of Assam’s Dhemaji district and the adjoining Siang Valley of Arunachal Pradesh has triggered flooding and severe riverbank erosion, affecting several villages and displacing multiple families.

According to local reports, the swollen waters of the Depi River have caused extensive erosion in the Galighat area under the Gali Panchayat. Several acres of land, including residential areas, have been washed away by the strong river current over the past few days. The erosion has destroyed a number of houses, leaving nine families homeless. The affected families are currently taking shelter in temporary huts erected on a nearby river embankment.

Meanwhile, overflowing waters from the Sille River have inundated residential areas in Malbhug and Shantipur villages under the Bahir Jonai Panchayat, creating hardships for local residents. Floodwaters have disrupted normal life and raised concerns about further damage if rainfall continues.

On Sunday, Jonai MLA Bhuban Pegu, accompanied by local administrative officials and community leaders, visited the affected areas to assess the situation. He directed the sub-divisional administration to provide immediate relief materials and take necessary steps for the rehabilitation of displaced families.

Despite the damage to property and infrastructure, no loss of human life has been reported so far. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely as residents remain concerned about the possibility of further flooding and erosion in the coming days.
