Guwahati Bar License Suspended for Serving Alcohol Past Permitted Hours

An inquiry into a deadly road mishap that killed three young women has exposed violation of rules by a plush bar in Guwahati, leading to suspension of its licence. According to an order issued by Kamrup (Metro) District Commissioner Swapneel Paul, the license of Exoro Bar on GS Road at Bhangagarh has been suspended for violating excise rules and license conditions, and the Superintendent of Excise has been asked to conduct an inquiry and submit a detail report within 15 days.

The investigation carried out by the Guwahati Traffic Police into the fatal road accident at the Matagorda area on April 26 has revealed that four persons involved in the accident visited the bar and had alcoholic drinks and food there before coming out of the premises at around 3 am. The bar has a late closing permission, allowing it to serve liquor on the premises till 12.30 am.

Subsequently, a report was sought by the DC from the Superintendent of Excise, Kamrup (Metro), in this regard and in the preliminary report, the Superintendent of Excise mentioned that the bar was kept open beyond the permissible time, which is a violation of Excise Rule 127(1) of Assam Excise Rules. 2016 and license conditions.  Taking a serious view of the matter, the DC in exercise of power conferred under Section 30 of the Assam Excise Act, suspended the license of the bar with immediate effect until further order.
