The Medicity has raised concerns over the growing burden of fatty liver disease in India, warning that nearly 39 per cent of the country’s adult population is estimated to be affected by the condition, with cases also rising among children. The hospital said most cases now fall under Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease (MASLD), driven by obesity, diabetes, poor dietary habits and sedentary lifestyles.
Dr. Pawan Rawal, Senior Director, Gastroenterology at Medanta Gurugram, said fatty liver is often a “silent disease” as symptoms usually remain undetected in the early stages. He noted that the condition can progress to inflammation, fibrosis, liver failure and even cancer if left unmanaged. However, he stressed that early intervention and sustainable lifestyle changes can reverse the disease. He advised patients to adopt diets rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins and healthy fats while avoiding sugary drinks, processed foods and fried items. He also recommended at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise weekly and 7-9 hours of quality sleep.
In Dibrugarh, healthcare providers and diagnostic centres are witnessing increasing awareness around preventive healthcare and lifestyle disorders, particularly among urban consumers. The growing demand for specialised consultations, liver screenings and wellness-driven healthcare services is expected to boost the region’s preventive healthcare market in the coming years.
