As a part of the State-wide awareness campaign against drug abuse, Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya led the ‘Nasha Mukt Bharat Sankalp Padayatra’ in Tinsukia on Tuesday.
The anti-drug march in Tinsukia marks the latest leg of the Governor’s ongoing regional outreach against substance abuse.
His padayatra campaign has covered various districts across Assam, starting from Cachar, progressing through Sribhumi in Barak Valley, and now reaching Dibrugarh and Tinsukia in Upper Assam.
Addressing a gathering at Tinsukia College, Governor Acharya hailed Tinsukia, terming the district as a shining symbol of Assam’s heritage, identity and industrial strength.
He highlighted the contributions of legendary figures like Jyoti Prasad Agarwala, Laxminath Bezbaruah and Bharat Ratna Dr. Bhupen Hazarika, urging today’s youth to draw strength from their rich legacy instead of falling prey to substance abuse.
“Inspired by the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, we are turning the ‘Nasha Mukt Bharat Sankalp’ into a community-driven, people’s movement,” the Governor said.
“Self-discipline, restraint, and moral conduct are deeply rooted in our civilisational heritage. While enforcement is vital, a drug-free society cannot be built through policing alone, it requires collective action from families, schools, civil society, and local administrations,” Acharya said.
The Governor commended the Assam government for its firm zero-tolerance policy against narcotics. He also praised welfare initiatives like Nijut Moina and Nijut Babu for empowering the youth to lead purposeful lives.
Following the public address, Governor Acharya flagged off and led the Nasha Mukt Bharat Sankalp Padayatra, walking alongside hundreds of citizens, students and local leaders from Tinsukia College to Mahatma Gandhi Park.
Upon arriving at the park, the Governor paid solemn tributes at the statue of Mahatma Gandhi, underscoring the ideals of truth, self-control, and community responsibility in the battle against addiction.
Earlier, Tinsukia DC Sumit Sattawan administered the Nasha Mukt Bharat Sankalp pledge to the participants.
