Nationally and internationally acclaimed filmmaker Rima Das is set to bring her highly celebrated and award-winning film Village Rockstars 2 to audiences across India. The film will be released in theatres on September 25 in Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Pune and Guwahati.
Set against the rural landscape of Assam, Village Rockstars 2 revolves around the coming-of-age journey of a young girl. Through themes of friendship, dreams and life’s uncertainties, the film sensitively portrays her deep bond with her mother, her passion for music and her spiritual connection with nature.
Das’ film Village Rockstars (2017) received widespread critical acclaim and was selected as India’s official entry for the Academy Awards. The film also won numerous national and international honours. Since then, the director has continued her successful run with acclaimed works such as Bulbul Can Sing, Tora’s Husband and Not a Hero, each earning recognition and accolades at film festivals worldwide.
Although Village Rockstars 2 shares its title and central character with the earlier film, it unfolds as an independent story. The film explores themes of childhood, adolescence, nature, climate change, music and the intimate relationship between a mother and her daughter. In the wake of recent devastating floods in Assam and Nepal, the film’s reflections on land, nature and a changing climate have gained renewed relevance.
The film had its world premiere at the Busan International Film Festival, where it won the prestigious Kim Jiseok Award. It later celebrated its European premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival.
