Police Open Fire Again Against Fake Currency Racket; 2 Accused Injured In Encounter

Police once again opened fire against accused persons. This time, two fake currency peddlers were injured in a police encounter. On Wednesday night, during an operation to recover fake currency in Naharbarhi area of Dhalaht in Lakhimpur district, police fired after the two accused tried to escape from police custody.

The two injured have been identified as Matibur Rahman and Mukchabul Alam. Both sustained bullet injuries to their legs in police firing. They were later admitted to Lakhimpur Medical College and Hospital. Both are currently undergoing treatment under tight security.

According to police, the two had earlier been detained in connection with an investigation into a fake currency racket. Based on leads from that probe, a police team had taken them to Naharbarhi area in Dhalaht to recover fake currency.

During the recovery operation, both accused attempted to flee from police custody. Despite repeated warnings to surrender, the two did not comply, following which police fired in self-defence. After both were shot in the legs, the police team brought the situation under control.

An investigation into the incident is underway. Police sources said operations are ongoing to identify other people linked to the active fake currency racket in the area and to track down the entire network.
