Severe flash floods triggered by torrential monsoon rains have brought Assam’s Nazira region to a standstill, causing widespread inundation and disrupting daily life and industrial operations. Since July 19, floodwaters have submerged roads, homes, vehicles and vital infrastructure, leaving thousands of residents stranded in one of the region’s worst flood emergencies in recent years.
Among the worst affected are employees of Kriss Drilling Pvt. Ltd., who are engaged in ONGC workover operations at the Nazira oilfield. With access roads cut off, floodwaters entered residential and operational facilities, forcing several workers to take shelter on rooftops. Many remained stranded for days without sufficient food, safe drinking water, electricity, mobile connectivity, sanitation facilities or immediate medical assistance.
The continuous rainfall has further aggravated the crisis, submerging buses and trucks while disrupting communication and transport links. Across several villages, families have abandoned their homes and sought refuge on rooftops, elevated structures and trees as water levels continue to rise.
The floods have also dealt a severe blow to local livelihoods, affecting daily wage earners, small businesses and transport operators. Access to essential supplies, healthcare and communication remains limited in many affected areas.
Kriss Drilling Pvt. Ltd. stated that it is working closely with ONGC and the local administration to provide all possible assistance to stranded employees while prioritising their safety until floodwaters recede and normalcy returns.
