In a bid to curb rising diabetic foot amputations and complications from varicose veins in Northeast India, Medanta Hospital organized a press conference in Guwahati, led by Dr. Rajiv Parakh, Chairman of Peripheral Vascular and Endovascular Sciences, Medanta Gurugram. The event spotlighted the alarming connection between diabetes and vascular disease, and promoted early intervention and minimally invasive treatments.
Dr. Parakh stressed that uncontrolled diabetes can lead to peripheral artery disease (PAD), poor wound healing, and foot ulcers, increasing the risk of amputation. He also noted that varicose veins, often overlooked as cosmetic, can cause serious complications like bleeding and ankle ulcers if untreated.
According to ICMR, over 5.5% of Assam’s population suffers from Type 2 diabetes. In Guwahati, a growing urban lifestyle and limited specialized care access contribute to a high burden of vascular diseases. Medanta’s new OPD at Sunvalley Hospital aims to bridge this gap, bringing advanced diagnostics and treatments like EVLA, RFA, Glue therapy, and motorized techniques for artery blockage closer to the people. Dr. Parakh advocated for a multidisciplinary approach and emphasized lifestyle changes for prevention. “Early diagnosis and vascular care can transform outcomes,” he stated.
