Kapili River water level rises after Khandong Dam gates opened, authorities issue alert

The water level of the Kapili River has started rising rapidly after seven gates of the Khandong Dam in Umrangso were opened following heavy rainfall in the region, prompting authorities to issue precautionary alerts for residents living along the riverbanks and in low-lying areas. According to official reports, the gates of the dam were opened on Sunday after water levels in the Khandong reservoir increased significantly due to continuous rain in the catchment areas. The release of water has led to a sharp rise in the flow of the Kapili River downstream.

Residents in several areas along the river have reported witnessing fast-flowing waters accompanied by foam, indicating the increased discharge from the reservoir. The sudden rise in water levels has raised concerns among local communities, particularly those residing close to the river and in flood-prone locations. In response to the situation, the North Eastern Electric Power Corporation (NEEPCO) has issued an advisory to the district administrations of 18 districts across Assam. The advisory urges local authorities to inform residents about the changing river conditions and ensure that people living near the river remain alert.

Officials have advised the public to avoid entering the river for any purpose, including fishing, bathing or crossing, as the strong currents could pose serious risks. People living in vulnerable areas have also been asked to take necessary precautionary measures and stay updated on official advisories. District administrations are closely monitoring the situation and coordinating with concerned agencies to assess river conditions and ensure public safety. Authorities said all necessary steps are being taken to prevent any untoward incidents as water levels continue to rise in the Kapili River following the dam water release.
