Against the backdrop of recent tensions between Assam and Meghalaya, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has urged the development of scenic destinations within Assam as alternatives to Shillong.
Speaking to the press, Sarma highlighted Umrangso, Diphu and Haflong as potential tourist hubs that could rival Shillong in popularity. “Shillong was our capital once, and our people love to visit Shillong. But gradually, Diphu, Haflong and Umrangso can emerge as beautiful destinations. We need to develop these places,” he said, calling on the tourism sector to promote Assam’s attractions.
He further revealed that discussions had taken place regarding proposed airports at Umrangso and Majuli, expressing confidence that both projects would be completed during his tenure. “Slowly, Umrangso will be able to give competition to Shillong,” Sarma asserted.
His remarks come amid heightened tensions between the two states following incidents involving Assam-registered vehicles and protests in Meghalaya. Sarma acknowledged that while some in Meghalaya opposed visitors from Assam, others welcomed them. He also named journalist Patricia Mukhim, alleging that writings critical of Assam tourists had incited hostility.
“We must accept that there are two types of people in Meghalaya—some like Mukhim who oppose Assam visitors, and others who love Assam. This contradiction sometimes leads to tensions,” Sarma said.
