Assam Minister Rameswar Teli has attributed the recurring flooding in Guwahati to heavy monsoon rainfall and the inflow of water from neighbouring Meghalaya. Speaking to the media, the minister said excessive rainfall, combined with runoff from higher areas of Meghalaya, has been the primary cause of widespread waterlogging in the city. He added that the Assam Government is taking necessary measures to improve drainage and ensure that accumulated water recedes as quickly as possible.
Teli said officials of the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) are working continuously to address the situation and minimise the impact of urban flooding. His remarks come amid growing public concern after recent heavy monsoon showers triggered artificial flooding across several parts of Guwahati, disrupting normal life, damaging property, and affecting traffic movement.
The minister reiterated that the government remains committed to strengthening flood management measures and improving the city’s drainage infrastructure to reduce the impact of such incidents during the monsoon season.
Responding to questions regarding the alleged embezzlement of donations at a Ram Mandir, Teli declined to comment in detail, stating that the matter is already under investigation. He said the incident was serious and noted that CCTV footage had captured the events. According to the minister, the administration has taken the necessary action, and the investigation is progressing. He added that it would not be appropriate to make further remarks while the inquiry is underway.
