Responding promptly, the cyber police managed to intercept a significant portion of the defrauded amount. As per a statement by the Guwahati Police, Rs. 5,35,753.66 has already been refunded to the victim’s bank account, with efforts ongoing to recover the remaining sum. “Rs. 5,35,753.66 was credited in the victim’s bank account today while the rest of the money is likely to be credited soon,” the Guwahati Police shared on X, formerly known as Twitter.
This incident sheds light on the escalating threat of cyber fraud, particularly targeting vulnerable demographics such as senior citizens. The Guwahati Police urge residents to maintain vigilance and promptly report any suspicious activities. In a recent case, another Guwahati resident, Chhote Narain Sinha, was duped out of a staggering Rs. 1.3 crore. Sinha, a resident of Rehabari, fell victim to a fraudulent investment scheme allegedly involving the foreign trade company Morgan Stanley.
Sinha revealed that he was persuaded to make significant payments in multiple instalments, believing them to be investments in the share market. Upon realizing the scam, he promptly reported the matter through the Cyber Crime online portal and lodged a complaint at the Cyber Police Station in Panbazar
