Gaurav Gogoi Loses Jorhat Seat in Major Electoral Setback

In a big setback for the Congress, the party’s chief ministerial face and Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi lost to his BJP rival Hitendranath Goswami by 23,182 votes in Jorhat Assembly constituency. Gogoi, who is the Lok Sabha member from Jorhat, made his electoral debut in this Assembly polls against Goswami, a five-time MLA who has represented the constituency thrice as an AGP leader and twice as a BJP legislator. The two other seats won by the BJP so far are Dhemaji and Sissibargaon. Education Minister Ranoj Pegu has won from Dhemaji constituency by a margin of 32,229 votes, while Jiban Gogoi emerged victorious from Sissibargaon by a margin of 40,593 votes. Among the results declared so far, is the Mazbat seat, which is won by NDA ally BPF. In Mazbat, BPF’s Charan Boro won by a margin of 55,546 votes. Polling for all 126 Assembly constituencies in Assam was held in a single phase on April 9 and counting of votes is still going on in the remaining seats.
