The Congress on Wednesday formally severed its political alliance with Akhil Gogoi-led Raijor Dal, accusing the regional party of repeatedly violating the principles and norms of the opposition alliance.
The decision, effective immediately, was taken at the direction of Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president and Deputy Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Gaurav Gogoi. An organisational circular announcing the termination was issued by APCC General Secretary (Organisation) Ramanna Baruah.
The Congress said the alliance had been formed ahead of the previous Lok Sabha and Assembly elections to bring together regional and Left parties, including Raijor Dal, with the objective of presenting a united opposition to what it described as communal forces.
However, the party alleged that Raijor Dal leaders repeatedly targeted the Congress through “malicious propaganda” and personal attacks during the alliance period. It also accused the regional party’s leadership of making “baseless, unwarranted and derogatory” remarks against leaders of other parties within the opposition grouping.
According to the Congress, such repeated incidents undermined the basic principles of the alliance and left it with no option but to end its political relationship with Raijor Dal.
The decision follows a sharp escalation in tensions between the two parties over the past week.
On Sunday, the APCC had strongly criticised remarks made by Akhil Gogoi against the Congress, accusing him of disregarding alliance norms. At a joint press conference, Assam Pradesh Mahila Congress president Mira Borthakur and APCC Media and Communication Department chairman Bedabrat Bora criticised Gogoi’s political conduct and cautioned him against allegedly acting as a “government agent”.
Bora also defended Congress leaders, including Gaurav Gogoi and former Leader of Opposition Debabrata Saikia, saying they had been actively involved in flood relief and rehabilitation efforts in Assam.
Taking a further swipe at Gogoi, Bora claimed that the Raijor Dal chief’s victory from Sivasagar was made possible by Congress support and argued that he would not have won the seat without the party’s backing.
Despite ending the alliance, the Congress said it would continue to raise public issues and hold the BJP-led government accountable over what it described as anti-people policies, injustice and misgovernance.
The split comes months after the May 2026 Assam Assembly election, in which the BJP won 82 of the 126 seats. The Congress secured 19 seats, while the Bodoland Peoples Front and Asom Gana Parishad won 10 seats each. The All India United Democratic Front and Raijor Dal won two seats each, while the All India Trinamool Congress secured one seat.
