Centre Should Consider Assam Floods A National Problem

In Assam, recurring floods and riverbank erosion have displaced lakhs, yet the Central government continues to ignore repeated appeals to declare it a national calamity and take full responsibility, said CPI leader D. Raja, citing the party’s draft political resolution. The resolution was released in New Delhi ahead of the CPI’s 25th Congress, scheduled in Chandigarh from September 21 to 25.

The document also flagged rising anti-India sentiments in Bangladesh and its tacit support for foreign-backed proposals, such as the US-supported idea of a ‘Rakhine State’ near the Chittagong border. It warned that such developments pose serious strategic threats to India’s Northeast, risking regional encirclement and weakening India’s influence.

The CPI called for immediate action from the Centre, emphasizing the need to bolster national security, promote inter-ethnic unity, and counter secessionist narratives. It stressed that inclusive development and integrating the people of the Northeast into the national mainstream are essential to preserving India’s territorial integrity. The resolution also urged early resolution of inter-state border disputes within the Northeast.
