The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) secured a decisive victory in the first-ever election to the Silchar Municipal Corporation, winning 34 of the 42 wards and strengthening its position in the Barak Valley.
Reacting to the results, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma thanked the people of Silchar for reposing their faith in the BJP. He said the mandate reflected public confidence in the government’s commitment to development, good governance and public service.
Commenting on the outcome, Sarma took a swipe at critics of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), stating that the BJP’s success in elections conducted through ballot papers also demonstrated the party’s broad public support.
The Chief Minister said the election was held during the party’s “Seva Sankalp Abhiyan”, commemorating Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 25-year journey in public service. According to him, the strong voter participation reflected people’s aspirations for development, peace, connectivity, empowerment and efficient governance.
Assam BJP president and MP Dilip Saikia said the BJP’s political journey in Assam began in the Barak Valley and has since grown into a major force across the state. Thanking voters for their participation, he also congratulated party candidates and workers for the victory.
Highlighting development initiatives in the Barak Valley, Saikia said the region had witnessed major investments and infrastructure expansion over the last decade. He referred to projects such as the proposed second secretariat in Silchar, the development of petroleum logistics infrastructure at Panchgram, the proposed greenfield airport and the planned elevated corridor aimed at easing congestion and improving regional connectivity.
He also cited the upcoming four-lane access-controlled Shillong-Silchar corridor and improved rail connectivity with Mizoram as projects expected to strengthen Silchar’s role as a key gateway to the Northeast.
Saikia said the electoral mandate should be viewed not merely as a political victory but as a responsibility to deliver better urban infrastructure, cleaner municipal services, improved roads and drainage systems, planned urban growth and greater economic opportunities.
The BJP leadership assured that elected representatives would work closely with both the state and central governments to accelerate Silchar’s development and translate public trust into tangible outcomes.
