Senior Congress leader Bhupen Borah has indicated that he may soon part ways with the party, fuelling strong speculation about his possible entry into the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Borah said he would announce his final decision by Tuesday night after consulting party workers and supporters, though political observers believe his move is almost certain.
Sources revealed that Borah had a telephonic conversation with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday evening and reportedly invited him to his residence in Ghoramara. The meeting is expected to focus on Borah’s political future and possible responsibilities ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections.
Late Monday night, Borah confirmed that he had submitted his resignation letter after 32 years in the Congress, though the central leadership has not yet accepted it. He expressed dissatisfaction with the party’s functioning, stating that his “dignity” had been hurt despite years of dedication and hardship.
Borah criticised internal decision-making within the party, claiming he was not consulted on key matters, including the Bihali by-election candidate selection. He also drew parallels with Sarma’s earlier exit from Congress, suggesting that internal leadership disputes had long plagued the party.
While clarifying that no formal discussion about joining the BJP has taken place, Borah said it would be a matter of pride if the Chief Minister visited his home. He asserted that wherever he goes, he would not join as a “mere constable” and would continue to speak for the people.
