Assam is currently in the grip of an intense heatwave, with temperatures soaring 6-7 degrees Celsius above normal, according to reports from the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Guwahati.Sanjay Shaw, the director of RMC, has underscored the alarming surge in maximum temperatures across most parts of the state. Guwahati, in particular, is experiencing a remarkable increase of 6 degrees Celsius above average, while Tezpur faces an even more staggering rise of 8.4 degrees.
On Thursday, Guwahati recorded a scorching high of 38.2 degrees Celsius, marking a deviation of 6.2 degrees from the usual average. Meanwhile, Tezpur registered a blistering 39.5 degrees Celsius, a staggering 8.4 degrees above norma. The meteorological department attributes this oppressive heat and humidity to the absence of rainfall. However, there is a silver lining on the horizon as heavy rain is anticipated in Assam in the coming days.
According to the latest bulletin from RMC, “A Depression over the central Bay of Bengal has been moving north-northeastwards, intensifying into a Cyclonic Storm over the east-central Bay of Bengal by the morning of May 25, 2024. Subsequently, it is expected to evolve into a Severe Cyclonic Storm by the night of May 25. The forecast suggests its northward movement, with a projected landfall between Sagar Island and Khepupara around midnight on May 26.”
