Assam’s Guardian Minister for Dima Hasao district, Krishnendu Paul, on Thursday reviewed the progress of restoration work on the damaged Haflong–Lumding National Highway and assessed plans for an alternative road project aimed at ensuring uninterrupted connectivity in the region.
The minister inspected the 3.4-km damaged stretch at Gerem near Nirimbangla while returning to Guwahati from Haflong. The section of the highway suffered extensive damage during the devastating natural disaster that struck the region in 2022, disrupting transportation and affecting connectivity between Dima Hasao, Barak Valley and other parts of Assam for a prolonged period.
Accompanied by Additional Deputy Commissioner Shaurya Sharma, Paul examined the current condition of the affected stretch and reviewed the status of the ongoing restoration works. Officials briefed him on the progress being made to restore the vital road link, which serves as a major transport corridor for passengers and goods movement in the region.
During the visit, the minister also reviewed the proposed alternative road project being developed as a long-term solution to maintain connectivity in case of future disruptions. Officials informed him that a status report for a 1.3-km section of the alternative route has already been prepared and that the tendering process has begun. The submission and opening of tenders have been scheduled for June 18.
Officials further stated that administrative formalities are being expedited so that work on the project can commence without delay. Stressing the importance of finding a permanent solution in the public interest, Paul directed the concerned departments to speed up the execution process and ensure timely completion of the works.
To review the progress further, the minister has convened a key meeting in Silchar on June 17. Representatives from the Dima Hasao district administration have been invited to attend. Sources said officials from the district administration, the North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council (NCHAC) and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) are also expected to participate in the discussions.
